Contemporary yet understated coastal residence, Chichester Harbour, West Sussex
Sometimes good residential architecture is about careful negotiation between the best interests of your client and restrictions placed by the local authority. This property is a prime example of going through a difficult planning process and still emerging with a beautiful building that meets the brief.
Overlooking picturesque Chichester Harbour, this plot demanded large windows to capitalise on its glorious views. But the local planning department was concerned about glare from the glass impacting upon those enjoying the water for leisure activities. They also expressed doubts about the addition of a modern building to a quaint conservation area.
We finessed the roof design to create overhang and shade above the Schueco glazing, which allowed us to make the most of the views within the restrictions placed upon us. We also worked hard to successfully convince the local authority that the property would be an asset to the area and add to the existing beauty.
Our design addresses the requirements of our client, the expectations of planners and the power of nature. We created a watertight, durable and sustainable building that is both suitable for its exposed coastal location and an example of understated contemporary design.
